Junior Church

The Central United Reformed Church in Derby was awarded with the Child Friendly Church Award in September 2010. As a congregation we are committed to welcoming children and young people into our church life , through worship and in regular social activities.

Each Sunday, the family service is geared towards the children during the first 15 minutes of the service, (from 10.30am.) There is usually a short children’s talk, and the prayers and hymns during this part of the service are aimed at the children. Sometimes we use worship flags during the hymns, and puppets to tell a story. There is a relaxed attitude towards small children moving round the sanctuary, and there is not an expectation that small children will be quiet! After this, the children leave the service and are involved in exciting activities, usually following the same theme as their parents. Each week at least 2 members of staff lead these activities for the children, aimed at 2 to 11 year olds. All Junior Church leaders are CRB checked. Occasionally (about 3 times a year) the church has an all-age worship, where the children are welcomed to stay in the service for the whole hour, during which time, the service will be suitable and active so that children remain engaged. At Central URC, children and young people are welcome to take communion. They will be taught about what this means and why we take communion during Junior Church, and communion is normally taken during the Junior Church session with the other youngsters and leaders.

The church is well equipped with children’s toys, and in addition we have an excellent soft play room for children under 5. This room has soft play blocks, a climbing frame fro toddlers, and a small ball pit. This room is available for children whenever the church is open. Parents are expected to supervise their own children in this room.

About 4 times a year, Junior Church arranges church parties, which normally take place on a Sunday afternoon, sometimes at the church and during the summer at our Church ground in Littleover, where we have a bouncy castle, and lots of outdoor games. Children and their parents are invited to join fun, games, creative activities and food. Everyone is welcome, and invitations are sent out to those who have been involved in the church through Tuesday Tots, the uniformed organisations and through baptisms. During the summer holidays we arrange a summer playscheme, sometimes for 3 days and sometimes during a Tuesday morning.Keep looking at the website or our facebook page (Central Kids) for more information about forthcoming parties and playschemes!
